Our Specialisms
Notting Hill homes tend to be lived in rather than kept for show. The pastel stucco terraces of Lansdowne Crescent, Elgin Crescent and Colville Terrace, the communal garden squares off Ladbroke Grove and Kensington Park Road, and the larger houses around Pembridge Square are often family homes with busy kitchens, children's rooms and a basement added below. Polished plaster suits that life well. Choice Finishes applies Venetian plaster, Marmorino, Tadelakt and microcement across the area for homeowners, architects and designers. Venetian Plaster — Lucido
Many Notting Hill clients are not looking for a mirror-polished, high-gloss wall. They want warmth and texture: a surface with gentle tonal movement that looks as though it belongs to the house. Marmorino, with its matt to satin finish, and Spatulata, where the trowel marks are left visible, both deliver that. For The Hoxton in Holborn we developed an aged off-white architectural plaster finish with controlled tonal variation, balanced against copper leaf detailing elsewhere in the room. That kind of understated, textured finish translates well to a Notting Hill kitchen with brass fittings or a living room full of timber and linen. You can see how we refined it through full-scale samples in our Hoxton case study.
In a typical Notting Hill townhouse, the stairwell carries traffic from basement to top floor, and the kitchen often opens onto the garden. A burnished lime plaster is harder-wearing than painted plaster, and small marks can usually be repaired locally rather than redecorating the whole wall. We often recommend Marmorino for staircases and hallways, and a sealed finish around kitchen areas. For rear extensions and garden rooms with large glazing, we sample on site to see how the finish reads in strong daylight.
Basement extensions are common under Notting Hill houses and garden squares. These spaces often become media rooms, guest suites, gyms or playrooms, and they benefit from a lighter finish that reflects what natural light there is. Before any decorative coat goes on, the waterproofing has to be right. Because we also carry out tanking and traditional plastering, we can look at the full build-up behind the finish and take responsibility for the background as well as the polished surface.
For showers and wet rooms we recommend Tadelakt, the traditional waterproof Moroccan lime plaster, polished with stones and sealed with olive-oil soap. It suits curved shower walls, niches and bath surrounds when correctly detailed. Venetian plaster and Marmorino are water-resistant once waxed and work well in cloakrooms and on bathroom walls away from direct water. Microcement is the alternative for a seamless floor running into a walk-in shower.
External polished plaster is possible on a sheltered rear elevation, garden wall or courtyard, but it needs a breathable, weather-resistant lime-based system over a sound render background. The painted stucco fronts that give Notting Hill its character are a different job: they need render repair and matching, which our Notting Hill area page covers.
Yes. Marmorino has a matt to satin finish, and Spatulata leaves visible trowel marks for a looser, more organic look. We can also apply a wash or tonal treatment for an aged appearance. Sampling on site lets you choose the level of sheen.
Burnished lime plaster is a hard-wearing surface once waxed or sealed, and minor marks can often be repaired locally. We usually recommend Marmorino for hallways and stairs, which see the most traffic.
Yes, once the waterproofing and wall background are correctly installed. We carry out tanking as well as decorative plastering, so we can advise on the whole build-up. A lighter, more reflective finish suits lower-ground rooms with limited daylight.
